One of the most common questions I get is: how often should I come for acupuncture?
There isn’t one schedule that works for everyone. It depends on what we’re treating, how long it has been going on and how your body responds.
But in general, acupuncture tends to work better when treatments are closer together at the beginning.
Why does frequency matter?
I often describe treatment as building momentum.
Each appointment gives us an opportunity to make some progress, and when treatments are reasonably close together, the next treatment can build on the last.
That doesn’t mean more treatment is always better. The goal is to use enough frequency to create meaningful change, then gradually reduce how often you need to come in.
How often do I usually recommend?
For many people, once a week is a good place to start.
If something is acute, particularly painful or significantly affecting day-to-day function, I may recommend twice a week for a short period.
If your schedule and budget allow it, twice-weekly treatment can sometimes help us build momentum faster because the treatments are closer together.
For longer-standing or less severe concerns, once a week may be completely appropriate.
I’ll usually give you a recommendation based on what I find during the first visit, and we can adjust it depending on how you respond.
When do we start spacing treatments out?
As things improve, I don’t want you coming in as often.
We may move from twice a week to once a week, then every two weeks, and eventually spread things out further.
The important part is that we’re looking for a change that lasts between appointments.
If your symptoms are improving and staying improved for longer, that’s usually a good sign that we can give your body more time between treatments.
Do I need acupuncture forever?
Not necessarily.
Some people finish a course of treatment and come back only when something new comes up.
Others choose occasional maintenance treatment because the things contributing to their symptoms are still part of everyday life — repetitive work, ongoing stress, training, poor sleep or recurring muscle tension, for example.
For those patients, a treatment every few weeks or once a month may be useful.
But maintenance is optional.
The goal is to need treatment less often as you improve.
